Humans are motivated by both pain and pleasure. Motivation from pain is more short-term motivation. Once the pain is cured or sufficiently avoided, the motivation stops. But pleasure is stronger because we tend to want it to stay. So, we are motivated to keep it. It's obvious, then, that joy is something we should cultivate so that it can help us endure and give us hope for the future. This class discusses the ways joy can be built up in our lives.

This sermon challenges believers to take ownership of their spiritual maturity. God expects us to grow beyond spiritual infancy, moving from the “milk” of foundational teachings to the “meat” of deeper truths. Through regular study, applying God’s Word, and practicing discernment, we develop the maturity needed to explain our hope and live faithfully. While growth comes from God, it requires intentional effort on our part to walk with Christ.

Christianity does not seek to alleviate all pain and suffering in this life. In fact, God teaches us that pain and suffering can be helpful to us. We know that growth only comes through pain, but what does God use that pain to accomplish? Is it worth the cost?
